Internet Governance Forum (IGF)

Athens Greece

30 October - 2 November 2006

The Tunis Agenda for the Information Society signed at the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society [WSIS, 13 – 15 November 2005] invited the Secretary-General of the United Nations to convene a new forum for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue, called the Internet Governance Forum [IGF], by the second quarter of 2006 and to implement this mandate in an open and inclusive process.

The Government of Greece offered to host the first meeting of the IGF which will take place in Athens on 30 October - 2 November 2006.

The overall theme of the meeting will be "Internet Governance for Development". The agenda will be structured along the following broad themes:

  • Openness - Freedom of expression, free flow of information, ideas and knowledge
  • Security - Creating trust and confidence through collaboration
  • Diversity - Promoting multilingualism and local content
  • Access - Internet Connectivity: Policy and Cost

Capacity-building and freedom of expression are the two cross-cutting priorities.

The meeting will be open for all WSIS accredited entities. Other institutions and persons with proven expertise and experience in matters related to Internet governance may also apply to attend.

ICC/BASIS-Government of Canada workshop

Beside the mentioned activities, and aware of the transcendence that capacity building has on the Internet Governance and the Information Society issues, ICC/BASIS, along with the Government of Canada, through Industry Canada, are organizing and sponsoring the workshop Building human and institutional capacity for meaningful participation in Internet Governance(PDF)  that will take place on November 1st, during the IGF activities.

This workshop is aimed to build human and institutional capacity to increase meaningful participation by all stakeholders from all regions in Internet governance policy issues, at all levels, using ideas for participation in security issues as examples to structure the discussion.
