The ninth edition of ICC’s Intellectual Property (IP) Roadmap is now available online.

First published in 2000, the latest edition reflects how intellectual property is rapidly evolving to serve a global economy that is increasingly dependent on conceptual products and global networks.

The new Roadmap addresses current and emerging intellectual property issues, such as IP trading and securitization, the confidentiality of IP legal advice, and the role of IP in sporting activities. It also includes an updated and expanded section on domain names, the addresses used to located data on the Internet.

The new Roadmap was produced by more than 30 experts drawn from ICC’s Commission on Intellectual Property and other bodies, and received input from ICC's network of members worldwide.

IP arbitration and mediation are highlighted in the new version, an area in which ICC has broad and in-depth expertise, reflecting the large and growing number of contracts disputed before the ICC International Court of Arbitration. An update is also provided on the EU’s initiative on patent litigation, an issue business is monitoring closely

The Roadmap delves into the new phenomenon of IP auctions and security exchanges, which allow IP rights holders to put their property on the market for valuation and trading, and looks at how IP contributes to the development of the sports industry, which is becoming a greater economic force in many countries.

Protecting the confidentiality of IP advice during legal proceedings is also covered. This crucial issue for companies falls under divergent rules in different countries and these rules are in need of greater harmonization.

As more countries around the world come to terms with the fact that ideas are driving economies like never before, this year’s Roadmap will be published in at least two additional languages – Chinese and Arabic – as well as in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
